How it works

  1. Forward the email to your ForwardThis address with some simple instructions, like "open an issue in the storefront project, label it bug, and assign it to me".

  2. ForwardThis drafts the issue as per your instructions and asks you to approve it first, because a GitLab issue usually cannot be deleted once opened.

  3. Approve it, and the issue is opened with your labels, assignee and milestone. You receive a confirmation email containing a link to the new issue.

FAQs

How do I create a GitLab issue from an email?
Forward the email to your ForwardThis address with some simple instructions, like "open an issue in the storefront project, label it bug, and assign it to me". ForwardThis drafts the issue, waits for your approval, then opens it and replies with a link. The first time, you will need a free ForwardThis account with GitLab connected - it takes about 30 seconds.
Why does it ask for approval before opening the issue?
Because deleting a GitLab issue is restricted to the project's owner, an opened issue usually cannot be taken back. ForwardThis will not make a change it cannot undo without asking you first.
Can GitLab create issues from email on its own?
Yes, when it is set up. Each GitLab project can have an incoming email address that opens an issue, and Service Desk does the same for support mail. That address is per-project and needs configuring; ForwardThis is one address for every project, with labels and an assignee read from a plain sentence, and a draft shown to you before anything is opened.
Can it set labels, an assignee and a milestone?
Yes. Labels, an assignee, a milestone and a due date can all be set when the issue is opened, so 'label it bug and give it to Ben, due Friday' is one instruction.
Which project does the issue go into?
Whichever your instructions name, either as a full 'group/project' path or just the project's name.
Does it work with Outlook and other email apps?
Yes. ForwardThis works with any email provider: Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and everything else. If it can forward an email, it works.
What happens to my email afterwards?
It gets deleted. ForwardThis holds your email briefly, then removes it completely. Nothing is stored long term.

Forward an email. Sh*t gets done.
