- How do I email receipts into Xero?

The first time, you will need a free ForwardThis account with Xero connected - it takes about 30 seconds.
- Isn't this the same as emailing an invoice to Xero?
- The job is different. An invoice records money you still owe, with a due date, so it shows in your payables. A receipt records spending that already happened, coded to the right category so your reports come out right. ForwardThis handles both; this page is the receipts job.
- How does a receipt get recorded in Xero?
- As a draft bill for the amount, dated when you paid, with the receipt file attached. That is how Xero records this kind of spend, and ForwardThis keeps it a draft: nothing is approved, issued or paid until you do it yourself in Xero.
- Can it read the amount off the receipt PDF?
- No. ForwardThis reads your email, not the inside of the attachment. Most receipt emails carry the amount in the message and that is what gets used; if it only appears in the file, put it in your message when you forward. The receipt itself is attached to the draft.
- What if it drafts the wrong thing?
- The confirmation email includes an undo that works for 24 hours, which deletes the draft. Nothing had been posted to your accounts in the first place, so there is nothing to correct after the fact.
- Does it work with Outlook and other email apps?
- Yes. ForwardThis works with any email provider: Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and everything else. If it can forward an email, it works.
- What happens to my email afterwards?
- It gets deleted. ForwardThis holds your email briefly in case you press undo, then removes it completely. Nothing is stored long term.
