- How do I send emails to Coda?
- Forward the email to your ForwardThis address with some simple instructions, like "add a row to the Suppliers table: name, email, terms". ForwardThis matches the details to the table's own columns, adds the row and replies with a link. All you need is a free ForwardThis account with Coda connected - it takes about 30 seconds.
- Do the details have to match my columns?
- The values are matched to the column names the table already has, so "name, email, terms" fills Name, Email and Terms without any mapping to set up. If something has no matching column, ForwardThis says so and lists the columns the table does have, rather than inventing one.
- Can it put the whole email on a page instead of a table?
- Yes. Ask for a page and the email's text becomes its content, either in a brand-new doc or inside one that already exists. It can also add text to the end of an existing page.
- Can it update or delete a row that is already there?
- Yes. Give it text that appears in the row, and pick a column to match on when one field should decide it. An edit or a delete is shown to you before it happens, with the row quoted, and a deleted row can be put back for 24 hours - though Coda re-adds it at the end of the table with a new id.
- Why can't it rewrite a page?
- Coda offers no way to read a page's existing content back out, so ForwardThis can add to the end of a page but will not replace what is on it - that would mean writing over words it never saw. Because there is no before to restore, the add itself has no undo, and the exact text is shown to you first instead.
- The row isn't showing yet - has it failed?
- Probably not. Coda applies row writes in the background, so a new row can take a moment to appear. ForwardThis checks the row is really there before it sends your confirmation, so once that email arrives, the row exists.
- What happens to my email afterwards?
- It gets deleted. ForwardThis holds your email briefly in case you press undo, then removes it completely. Nothing is stored long term.
