- How do I send an email to Dropbox?
- Forward it to your ForwardThis address with some simple instructions, like "file this under Properties/Milton Road/Legal". ForwardThis saves the attachment to the right folder, letting Dropbox rename it if the name is already taken, and replies with a link. The first time, you will need a free ForwardThis account with Dropbox connected. It takes about 30 seconds.
- What if I name a folder that does not exist?
- No problem. ForwardThis can create folders in your Dropbox for you, and the confirmation tells you when it has.
- What if a file with the same name is already there?
- Nothing is overwritten. Dropbox renames the new file automatically, and the confirmation shows the name it was given.
- Can I email files to Dropbox directly?
- No. Dropbox does not give you an upload address to email files to; its file requests are links you send to other people. ForwardThis fills the gap: forward the email, and the attachment is filed where you asked.
- Can it share the folder it just filed into?
- Yes, after it checks with you. Name the person and the folder is shared with them. A folder that was never shared before is turned into a shared folder on the way, which Dropbox does in the background, so ForwardThis waits for that to finish before it reports the share. If a file already has a shared link, that link is what comes back, rather than a second one with different settings.
- Does it work with Dropbox Paper?
- Only for finding things. Ask for a Paper doc by name and ForwardThis can find it, but it files attachments and a Paper doc is not one, so it never writes to Paper. A file it deleted can be put back for 30 days, and a file that is still there can be put back to an earlier version by date.
- Does it work with Outlook and other email apps?
- Yes. ForwardThis works with any email provider: Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and everything else. If it can forward an email, it works.
- What happens to my email afterwards?
- It gets deleted. ForwardThis holds your email briefly in case you press undo, then removes it completely. Nothing is stored long term.
