- How do I send an email to Google Sheets?
- Forward the email to your ForwardThis address with a line saying which sheet it belongs in and what to record, like "add this to my Expenses sheet with the supplier, amount and due date". ForwardThis reads those details out of the email, writes them as a new row under the matching column headings, and replies to confirm with a link to the row. The first time, you'll need a free account with Google Sheets connected, which takes about 30 seconds - that's the entire Google Sheets email integration.
- Do I have to build anything before I can turn an email into a spreadsheet row?
- No. Sending an email to a spreadsheet usually means setting up a form, a rule or a script first. Here you write the sheet name and the fields you want on the email itself, so a different email can go to a different sheet tomorrow with nothing changed at either end.
- How does it know which column each value goes in?
- It matches what you asked for against the headings already in your sheet, so "amount" lands under Amount and "due date" under Due date. Nothing is guessed: if you name something the sheet has no column for, it tells you which one it couldn't find instead of putting the value somewhere convenient.
- Can it update or read a row as well as add one?
- Yes. It can change a value in an existing row, delete a row you tell it to, and answer questions about what's in the sheet by reading it back to you in a reply. It reads the whole sheet, not just the first few hundred rows, so a match on row 900 is still a match.
- What if it writes the wrong thing?
- The confirmation email includes an undo that works for 24 hours. For a row it added, undo clears the cells it wrote and leaves the empty row behind, because deleting the row would shift everything written after it. It checks nobody has edited those cells first, and tells you if they have.
- Is this better than a Zapier rule or a Google Form?
- Not always, and it's worth saying so. If the same email arrives in the same shape every day, a Zapier rule or a form will do that job more cheaply.
