Why you need ForwardThis

Email is messy, every message asking for something different. It means constantly leaving your inbox and juggling tabs. ForwardThis skips all of that: forward an email along with some simple instructions, and it’s handled. Compatible with every email provider, and it works across the apps you’re already using.

Questions

How do I send an email to Smartsheet?
Forward the email to your ForwardThis address with a line saying which sheet it belongs on and what to record, like "add this to the Variations sheet with the plot, cost and delay". ForwardThis takes those details out of the email, adds the row under the matching columns, and replies to confirm with a link. The first time, you'll need a free account with Smartsheet connected, which takes about 30 seconds - that's the entire Smartsheet email integration.
How does it know which column each value goes in?
It reads your sheet's own column titles and matches what you asked for against them, ignoring capitals, so "cost" lands under Cost. Nothing is guessed: if you name something the sheet has no column for, it tells you which one it couldn't find rather than putting the value somewhere convenient.
Can it attach the email's files to the row?
Yes. Attachments are read straight out of the forwarded email and put on the row, so the drawing or the quote sits with the entry rather than in your downloads folder. It can also comment on a row, update one, or read a sheet or report back to you in a reply.
What if it puts something in the wrong row?
The confirmation email includes an undo that works for 24 hours. Smartsheet has no bin for deleted rows, so before undoing a row it added, ForwardThis checks whether anyone has edited that row since. If someone has, it leaves the row alone and tells you, because their work matters more than tidying up ours.
How is this different from Smartsheet's own forms and update requests?
Those point outward: a form collects answers from people you send a link to, and an update request emails a row out for someone to change. Neither one takes an email that has already landed in your inbox and turns it into a row. Smartsheet email automation with ForwardThis is that missing direction, and if your emails all arrive in the same shape a rule in Zapier would do it more cheaply.
