- How do I create a reminder from an email?
- Forward the email to your ForwardThis address with some simple instructions, like "remind me about this on Friday at 9am". ForwardThis sets the reminder for that day and time, with an alert on it, and replies to confirm. All you need is a free ForwardThis account with Google Calendar, Todoist, TickTick or Google Tasks connected - it takes about 30 seconds.
- What is the difference between a reminder and a to-do?
- A to-do sits on a list until you work through the list. A reminder comes and finds you: it has a time on it and it goes off. So the two want different homes. A reminder belongs where the alert actually fires, at an hour on a day, rather than in a queue of tasks you have to open something to see.
- Where does the reminder go?
- Wherever your instructions ask for, out of the apps you have connected: Google Calendar, Todoist, TickTick or Google Tasks. Ask for it in the diary and it goes in the diary; ask for it in your task app and that is where it is set.
- Can it set a time, not just a day?
- On your calendar, in Todoist and in TickTick, yes: 9am on Friday is 9am on Friday. Google Tasks is the exception, because Google Tasks itself only holds a date, so a reminder set there turns up on the right day rather than at an hour.
- Can it warn me before the thing itself, not on the day?
- Yes. Ask for the alert separately and it is set that far ahead: "put the renewal on the 18th and remind me an hour before" gives you the entry on the day and the nudge before it. Ask for a repeating one, like "every Monday", and it repeats.
- Doesn't my phone already do reminders?
- It does, and for something you can say out loud your phone is faster. The awkward one is a reminder about an email: the date is in the message, the detail is in the message, and setting it by hand means retyping both. Forwarding it takes one line. ForwardThis does not connect to Apple Reminders, so if that is where yours live, this is not for you.
- What if I get the day or the time wrong?
- Press undo. The reminder is removed and you can forward the email again with the right time. Undo works for 24 hours.
- What happens to my email afterwards?
- It gets deleted. ForwardThis holds your email briefly in case you press undo, then removes it completely. Nothing is stored long term.
